I just got back from a depressing trip to the pool. I have picked up a shoulder injury.
To be honest I have had a little bit of discomfort in my right shoulder for a few weeks now, but today is started after about 40 lengths and got progressively worse. I pushed on until I reached 1km (which is 56 lengths of the little pool that I use) and then I had to stop. It was a big mistake not to stop immediately.
Shoulder injuries are the most common problem for swimmers. In many cases complaints take the form of tendonitis of the rotator cuff, the group of muscles and their respective tendons that work to stabilise the shoulder. This appears to be my problem.
The main casues of shoulder injuries in swimming are:
- Poor technique
- Strength imbalance
- Increasing the amount or intensity of training too quickly
I got out of the habit of tumble turning several years ago and have really struggled to get back into doing them. Because of my office location I swim in an 18m pool which means that during a 4km session I turn more than 200 times. I am pretty sure that it is the repetative action of pulling myself into the wall at the end of each length that has caused this problem.
I am going to have to ask Miguel Angel for some advice about how to deal with this but I already know that I am going to be out of the pool for at least the next couple of weeks, perhaps far longer. A depressing prospect.
